100% as Advertised, October 23, 2011

Sedona – See all my reviews

This review is from: GoalZero Escape 150 (Misc.)

Escape 150 battery pack (the Coffee Maker looking battery) often goes with the Boulder 15 Solar Panel. The advertisement says to expect to fully charge the Escape 150 battery from empty charge in about 15 hours using the panel. When I bought the two together I charged the battery to full and then ran it down to empty. The next morning at sun up (I live in the California desert mountains . . so I’m high above the haze layer and have 100% crystal blue sky and sun) so I faced the panel directly at the sun for 11 hours solid. At the end of that time I was knocking on the door of 80% power (75%??) according to the battery charge indicator, and took the next day for another 3 hours (total of 14ish hours) to get the Escape 150 fully charged. Recommendation: if you’re going to run the Escape 150 down to empty during the day/night (for laptops, etc.) then you’ll need two (2) Boulder 15 solar panels (daisy-chained) to fully recharge the battery the next day. NOTE: Also, I did run the battery to empty off 3 of their LED lights (which are outstanding at 207 illumens 3-watt, “Light-a-life” as they’re called). Manufacturer states to expect getting 16 hours of light (with 3 lights daisy chained). I got 17 hours 10 minutes with the Escape 150 battery.

I had to stay in a tent for a week during the hottest week of the summer in upstate NY. I was alone with my dogs. I was able to run a 12v DC fan I had all night and still listen to podcasts on my smartphone while it stayed charged. I had to recharge it once and used the outlet at the camp pavillion. Really glad I had this.

This review is from: GoalZero Escape 150 (Misc.)

Bought this to run my CPAP while camping with my son. First use of the Escape 150 it worked great. Camped outdoors in a tent and it ran my CPAP for a good 8 -9 hours and still had 2 bars left. Next time I used it, we were camping inside, but no available power outlet, only lasted 8 hours, with no bars left. Fully charged both times. Charged it again and it only lasted the 8 hours again. Called Goal Zero support, they had me disconnect the battery for 5 mins and then hook it up again, also pull the 3 fuses and re-inert them. I did so, then fully charged it again and now only lasted 4 hours. Called them back and sent it in for service. When they sent it back, it only lasted 6 hours. They then swapped it out for a new one and that one only lasted 8 hours. Would recommend looking at a different product. Need to find another myself for next camping trip.

Exactly what I wanted, August 16, 2005

This review is from: Avery Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards for Inkjet Printers, Matte, White, Pack of 200 (08871) (Office Product)

I don’t know what printers other people have, so be aware that I have an Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX. These cards work perfectly fine for me, I’ve never had a problem with alignment or anything like that.

The ink sets immediately, no smearing. The type is crisp like a laser printer. My colors turn out great.

Since this is a matte finish card, there isn’t the professional glossy look, but that’s what I wanted so I’m fine with that.

It’s true these cards are not as thick as the super-professional ones like my husband got from his work, but then again they also paid a great deal more for their cards. For the cost of these, the thickness is fine.

The edges are clean cut. Personally, I can only barely tell there’s perforations.

I felt like I got more than my money’s worth for these cards. If I wanted a more professional look (like thicker cards, gloss), I’d naturally have to be willing to pay more.

Update (9/05): The newest cards I got were significantly thicker than the older ones I had. They’re comparable to other business cards I’ve been receiving.

Professional Gorgeous Cards, July 12, 2006

These are GREAT. You can bleed off all four sides to create gorgeous full color cards on your ink jet printer. The only trick with the Microsoft Word template is to make a text box (insert menu > text box) that is larger than the table cell for each card so your graphics print beyond every edge. Or – make your own template in a design layout program. Then when you snap them apart – no white gaps. The paper is thick and the edges are crisp and clean.

Boy, this card is thin (still thicker than a regular sheet of paper). Nowhere on the package is the gauge (thickness) and if I knew what I know now I probably would not have purchased this.

Printing and seperating the cards was very easy though.

5 Tips to Sell Your Small Business

Create enduring structures

When selling your business, you need to prove that it will continue long after you have gone. The new owner needs to see that the business isn’t solely dependent on you micro-managing. This can only happen if you create sustainable management structures. It is helpful to also get a board of advisors if possible. Ensure that your employee structure is also strong, and the core business can run without your interference. The more robust your structures, the easier and more attractive it will be to sell a business.

Get your books in order

This is an absolute no-brainer, but it is ignored too often. Getting your records in order is very important. It helps assess the real performance of your business because numbers don’t lie. While your sales may look busy, are you leaking money from your supplier side, making your business less profitable than it really is? Your books will also be needed in valuation of your business, so get them in order early.

It is worth investing in an auditor, even though it may cost quite a pinch. A clean bill of health from a reputable auditor will help boost your business image and also value.

Keep it quiet

Don’t broadcast your intention to sell to everyone, it causes uncertainty. If you must, release the information to small, confidential, groups and have them even sign confidentiality agreements. Letting news of your intended sale slip may have some of your best employees packing. Losing valuable employees is one way of losing business value. Worse off , it can affect your suppliers, and they can suddenly withdraw all lines of credit. If your normal business operations are hindered, you won’t have a very robust structure to show to prospective buyers, not good.

Get an expert

For micro-managers like me, this is not an easy tip. Seeing every small detail of your business through can be a tiring, but innately rewarding experience. However, in this case, leave the work to professionals. Get a professional to do valuation for you, which would help you from a legal and financial perspective. When it comes to the negotiation, let an expert handle the negotiation for you. Get a seasoned broker to do the work while you concentrate on what is important: running the business. During this period, your business may need your attention (not control!) to ensure that things are running fine and the system is robust.

Learn to let go

If you have spent your life building a business, and now you are handing it over, letting go can be a problem. The emotional and psychological attachment to the business may be greater than you think. What’s more, if you were a busy business owner, you now find that your days have less activity.

As you work on creating a hands-free business, work also on letting go. Make a list of things you can look forward to doing, go for that holiday, and find a meaningful way of occupying your time.

A Clear How-To Guide for All Would-Be Creators, April 5, 2012
By
goldenrulecomics (New Jersey) – See all my reviews

This review is from: How to License Your Million Dollar Idea: Cash In On Your Inventions, New Product Ideas, Software, Web Business Ideas, And More (Paperback)

I found lots of useful, clear information in this book that I hope will enable me to pursue a license for some ideas I have been kicking around. Author Harvey Reese does a good job explaining how to develop an idea and find a company that will pay you for it. He also provides many examples and past histories that can help you understand what you are facing and that provide some inspiration.

In this edition he adds how to go about licensing software, Internet businesses and game/reality TV shows, and those sections to me were the weakest.

One aspect I found odd is that he warns several times throughout the book not to fall for invention marketing companies, which will simply milk you of money then leave you dry. But at the same time he says he offers services that seem very similar for a fee. I’m not sure what the difference is between those other companies and Reese’s own. Since he says repeatedly in his book that it’s best to try to get a license yourself, I think you should just skip using his service. I know I will.

Because of the weaker sections and the self-promotional aspects to the book I knocked one star off the rating. Still, I do recommend the book if you have an idea that you think can be commercialized.

For more in-depth book reviews I’ve done, search for goldenrulecomics on the Squidoo.com website.

Reese has put a lot of info in this book, and covers all the aspects required in turning an idea into real cash. I liked how he differentiated an “idea” from “idea for an idea” – which for me was an eye opener, and the fact that not all ideas need to be patented to be turned into money.
Overall a very good, easy to read book that shows you exactly what the title says, and does it well.

I am just an amateur stamp collector but have a collection going back quite some time. I began collecting when I bought a repossessed mobile home when I was 21 and the old owners left behind a lot of junk a a extensive stamp collection. I am in the Army and have been overseas 11 of 14 years so I recently decided to take a further interest in my stamp collection since I am stateside again. The eyepiece is heavy and magnifies quite well, there is a tiny blue LED and Two White LEDS, you can select Off, Blue or White, it comes with a tiny “Wrench” to remove the cover to change the batteries. I am very happy with this product, certainly sturdy enough to handle the “Rigors” of examining stamps to be sure! It’s much sturdier than I expected and the lenses are quite clear. Good Product.

Very useful, replaces our old loupes completly, June 10, 2012

Loupes are great, they’re small, portable and show enough micro detail to be very useful in
the field or in a store but lighting is always difficult. The addition of LED lighting in this
loupe takes its usablity to a much higher level, showing enough information that we often don’t
need to go to a micoscope.
The UV light helps to enhance edges and can bring out certain colors in diamonds as another
indication of quality.

I ordered this item because it features two kinds of light source and has a very reasonable price. It arrived on time, but didn’t light up. The vendor contacted me proactively and asked if I was satisfied. First of all, I was impressed that they followed up with me on such an inexpensive item, but I was blown away when they immediately sent a replacement and followed up yet again. It works very well and I am delighted with the service from this vendor. I will do business with them again – In fact, I already have.

The importance of storytelling in marketing

Are you and/or your organisation good at storytelling? While you may initially think telling stories is something that you will only need to do with children, it is something that actually plays a vital role when it comes to business and marketing.

Regardless of the size of your company or the industry you operate in, you ought to bear in mind that your products and/or services ought to have a story behind it that communicates a particular purpose to your target audience.

Whether you’re focusing on existing customers, hoping to appeal to new clients, members of staff or the general public, it’s vital your stories demonstrate your organisation as one that is reputable and works to the highest standards.

There are many different reasons why a business may want to tell stories to a target audience – it could be that you’re hoping to encourage customers to identify with your brand or raise awareness of new services – but it’s important to implement a campaign that will not just captures people’s attention, but one they will remember for many years to come.
In doing this, it’s worth making sure there is a clear, easily identifiable message behind your story that your target audience will remember and can tell their friends, relatives and colleagues about.

However, you should bear in mind it’s not just your organisation’s services and products that will have a story behind them, but everything your company does/has its name attached to. This includes the way that your staff dress while at work, the emails and tweets you send to customers and the pictures used in advertisements, so if there are any elements that go against the message you are attempting to put out there these need to be corrected.

Once you’ve established the particular tale – or tales – you want to tell, you need to consider the way that you intend to communicate them to its target market. No matter the subject matter, it’s important your story is delivered in a format that is relevant to your intended audience.

This could be done through direct mail campaigns, email newsletters, social media or interacting on a face-to-face basis, but regardless of what methods you are considering, you should ensure that it can be easily understood by recipients. If possible, it’s worth utilising a range of mediums to maximise the potential number of people who can see it and to make your overall campaign more interesting.

Of course, there is little point in creating and implementing stories for a target audience if you don’t have any way to keep track of their effectiveness. Before going ahead with this kind of marketing campaign, it’s a good idea to set in place clearly definable goals that can be used to assess its success.

Although the particular targets you have will depend on the initiative’s subject matter and the media format(s) that you have chosen, it’s important you seek to obtain a good return on your investment. This is where promotional products can prove to be particularly beneficial, most notably as the British Promotional Merchandise Association reports that such items provide greater yields than the likes of billboards and radio adverts. Indeed, research from the organisation indicates the average cost per impression attached to a mid-range pen stands at £0.001, compared to £0.003 for both radio commercials and outdoor advertising displays and £0.008 for TV.

If you are looking to utilise branded products, it’s worth considering getting personalised pens from 4imprint. As items such as these can be used repeatedly, they enable you to create a positive long-lasting impression of your brand among recipients.

What is your business doing when it comes to storytelling? We’d love to hear from you, so please leave a comment below.
